Looking for a peaceful, culture-rich escape from New York City that doesn’t require a car? Let me introduce you to Cold Spring, NY — a small Hudson Valley town filled with history, art, nature, and charm. Best of all, it’s just 1 hour and 24 minutes from Grand Central via Metro-North.
From historic chapels to modern art museums and some of the most scenic river views in New York State, this Cold Spring day trip was everything I needed and more. Here’s exactly how I spent one perfect day — and how you can, too.
🚆 How to Get to Cold Spring from NYC

Hop on the Metro-North Hudson Line from Grand Central Terminal. The ride is smooth, quiet, and scenic, following the Hudson River most of the way. In just 1 hour and 24 minutes, you’ll arrive at Cold Spring Station — no transfers, no stress.
🕊 Stop #1: The Chapel Restoration

Right by the river, this 1833 Greek Revival chapel is peaceful, timeless, and full of charm. Whether you’re into historic architecture or just want a quiet moment, The Chapel Restoration is the perfect way to start your day in Cold Spring.
🌿 Stop #2: West Point Foundry Preserve

This historic site and nature preserve was once a major supplier of ironwork during the 1800s, especially during the Civil War. Today, it’s a lush walking trail through industrial ruins, with waterfalls, bridges, and interpretive signs that connect you to Cold Spring’s rich history. Don’t miss the 1865 office building and the mill overflow!
🌸 Stop #3: Boscobel House & Gardens

We visited during the Saturday farmers market, but the highlight was definitely the gardens. It’s honestly one of the most magical gardens I’ve ever walked through. Boscobel also offers house tours for anyone interested in early American interiors and art.
🚋 Stop #4: Main Street via Trolley

The Putnam County trolley makes getting around easy. We explored Cold Spring’s adorable Main Street with stops at Cold Spring Coffeehouse for a caffeine boost and Rowseelee for a refreshing matcha. Don’t skip KaPe Mo — the best boutique in town for fashion, gifts, and more coffee!
🌊 Stop #5: Hudson River Waterfront

We took the pedestrian tunnel to access the other side of the train tracks and found a peaceful riverside park. It’s quiet, breezy, and offers some of the best Hudson River views in the area. The perfect spot to relax, journal, or simply enjoy the moment.
🍽 Stop #6: Lunch at Hudson House River Inn

Lunch with a view! Hudson House River Inn is a historic inn and restaurant with one of the best riverfront dining views around. The food and service were incredible — I’m already planning a weekend stay here!
🎨 Final Stop: Magazzino Italian Art Museum

We were picked up by the free Magazzino museum van and ended our day exploring this gorgeous space filled with contemporary Italian art, architecture, and even donkeys. There are swings, a relaxing café, and scenic walking paths. It’s the perfect mix of creativity and calm.
🚆 The Ride Back to NYC

After a full, fulfilling day, we hopped back on the Metro-North and were back in NYC by evening — feeling recharged, inspired, and already excited to return.
